Gifts are a wonderful Christmas tradition, but home-bound loved ones appreciate thoughtful gifts any time of the year. In our experience as a home care provider, we’ve noticed that simple gifts make a big difference. These low-cost ideas are perfect to give to people who may not be able to get out very much on their own.
DVDs- Bring a DVD from your collection, or visit the discount section of the store to find a classic movie for your loved one. Consider titles from the era when they grew up or collections of old television shows.
Bulletin board or cardholder with ribbons- Sometimes managing picture frames is difficult, and home-bound folks also like to display reminders of someone’s thoughtfulness. A bulletin board or cardholder with ribbons is a simple way to keep cards and photos visible.
Puzzles and coloring books- Often available at dollar stores, these items can help pass time and bring back positive memories. Look for puzzles and coloring books featuring images your loved one will enjoy. If they grew up on a farm, look for animal puzzles. If they enjoy art, look for coloring books with beautiful patterns.
Chocolate!- Depending on diet restrictions, most everyone loves chocolate. Older adults begin to lose the ability to taste, but chocolate has a strong flavor that remains attractive. Chocolate shakes are an enjoyable option for people with dental challenges.
Fresh fruit- Cutting up fresh fruit can be a difficult task for those who are losing fine motor skills. Stop by with a disposable container filled with cut up watermelon, orange slices, or pineapple.
Visits- More than anything, home-bound loved ones crave visits. Among our home care clients, we notice that many are lonely and feel like they are missing out. Can you imagine how you would feel if you lost the ability to drive or connect with others? Stop by for an hour and bring uplifting news, read a story together, or share one of the gift items listed above. Your small act of kindness will likely make someone’s whole day.
